PRESS RELEASES

Time to share events industry knowledge, says Kadoro

An unprecedented opportunity beckons to put the events management industry on a high growth trajectory – if only practitioners will share knowledge and work together.

The ‘dare to share’ call comes from Amanda Rogaly, managing director of fast-growing Kadoro Events & Communications, a Rosebank-based company that already serves a substantial base of blue-chip clients.

“All industry participants, from recent entrants to larger players, need to share information and engage in open-forum discussions,” says Amanda.

“In many instances, local industry players operate to world standards, enabling us to embrace global opportunities. But we could do so much more by sharing information. Coming together in an open industry forum could be the catalyst for huge gains by a wider range of industry participants.

“Work volumes have grown in recent years; so we are not competing for a smaller piece of a declining market. We can attain even higher quality standards by sharing information about the special expertise of suppliers, the implications of any pending legislation relevant to our sector, the emergence of new venues and the impact of new trends.

”Being secretive about our work impedes industry progress. Recent developments illustrate both the scale of the opportunity and the barriers we face.”

The major development has been the sudden relocation of IPL Twenty20 cricket to South Africa, the accompanying Bollywood razzmatazz and spin-offs such as the Miss Bollywood SA competition.

“When a global event lands in the lap of an inwardly-focused industry,” says Amanda, “the general reaction is to remain reactive and wait for the phone to ring.

“Dynamic professionals working in a growth-oriented industry can be proactive. They should be taking strategic plans and creative ideas to corporates to demonstrate how local brands can benefit.

“One of the major benefits of a more open industry is the opportunity to develop broader strategic insights by sharing experience of successful executions of major projects.”

To get information-sharing under way, Kadoro Events & Communications is to launch a page on Facebook, the social networking site, as an initial platform for pooling ideas. Simultaneously, Amanda Rogaly has confirmed her willingness to ‘share secrets’.

“I know I may be talking to competitors,” says Amanda. “That doesn’t prevent a member of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers from speaking to other Naamsa members. The same goes for other industry bodies.

“We need to communicate to find out what it takes to become a respected events industry professional – the qualifications, knowledge, experience, specialist skills, in-house resources, outsourced capabilities; whatever. If you possess only some items on the wish-list, how do you obtain the rest? Who can help you?”

By filling the gaps, repairing weaknesses and accessing a wider pool of resources, industry players would be better placed to optimise new opportunities.

Amanda adds: “Competing for a bigger slice of the cake is fine. But the really smart thing to do is to grow the overall cake at the same time. For that we have to think big. Unfortunately, it’s just not happening.”
